Meet Em Sok
Em Sok is 78 years old and has been blind since he was 12 years old due to a sickness that he had. He lives in a village called Tek Pous which is in the province of Kampong Chhnang in Cambodia.
His mother took care of him for many years, including during the time of the Khmer Rouge and after his mother passed away he has been looking after himself.
Before New Day New Life came to help him, he lived in his small hut and relied on his neighbours and others giving him food and helping him. Every day his life is an incredible struggle.
New Day New Life Caring for Em Sok
New Day New Life has been helping Em Sok since 2016 with monthly food packages of rice, dried fish, canned food and other essentials (such as clothing, cooking pots, vitamins and paracetamol) that help keep him fed and help him have a better day-to-day life.
Our staff, Mr Ath Tun, also tries to visit him at least once a week to check on him and to spend some time encouraging him and bringing some news and happiness to him.
Our New Day New Life team, during a recent visit when we were distributing food, heard from him that he was having some health issues. After hearing about his need and concerns, one of our supporters kindly provided some funds so we could bring him from his home to Phnom Penh so he could go to a hospital in Phnom Penh for treatment.
Em Sok Gets Medical Treatment
On Monday, 11 June 2018, Mr Ath Tun arranged for a car and driver to go to where he lived and pick him up. Then they travelled almost three hours to get to the New Day New Life office in Phnom Penh. Because they were both very tired they rested so they could be ready to go to the hospital on the following day.
Mr Ath Tun (Staff) and Maria Rath (Director) spent almost two days helping take Em Sok to different hospitals and through a lot of checkups including X-Ray for his lung and ulrasound scan for his back and lungs. After all the tests it was found that he has lost almost one lung due to infection as well as other health issues.
After all the tests he received lots of medicine and then had time to have a rest and a good substantial meal before he and Ath Tun headed back to Kampong Chhnang.
Thanks again to our very special supporter for providing the finances that were so essential for Em Sok to get this treatment and diagnosis.
